For the period 1880-1890, here are the characteristics to look for:

  • Square, heavy weight card stock
  • From 1880-1890 there were different colours for face and back of mounts. From 1882-1888 one finds a matte-finish front, with a creamy-yellow, glossy back.
  • From 1866-1880 Borders were red or gold rules, single and double lines. From 1884-1885 one finds wide gold borders, and from 1885-1892 one finds gold beveled edges.
  • Lettering included gold text on black card stock.
