Shaped Cake Pans

I’ll be listing a Wilton cake pan in the shape of Holly Hobbie soon and thought I’d spend a little time on the use of shaped cake pans. Wilton is the premier modern manufacturer of the shaped cake pan. Each cake pan comes with suggestions for decorating orginally. But since these directions get discarded, Wilton has a helpful resource on their website that has downloadable pdfs for each design.

The one for Holly Hobbie contains a list of decorating equipment, recipe for icing and detailed directions for decorations.

Dating Cabinet Photos 1880-1890

For the period 1880-1890, here are the characteristics to look for:

Square, heavy weight card stock
From 1880-1890 there were different colours for face and back of mounts. From 1882-1888 one finds a matte-finish front, with a creamy-yellow, glossy back.
From 1866-1880 Borders were red or gold rules, single and double lines. From 1884-1885 one finds wide gold borders, and from 1885-1892 one finds gold beveled edges.
Lettering included gold text on black card stock.

Real Photo Postcard-Bridge

What is a real photo postcard?

Real photo postcards or RPPCs are actual photographs that have been developed on photographic paper. Typically they are the same size as postcards (3-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches).

How can you tell a real photo postcard from a printed postcard?

Look at the postcard with a magnifying glass. If you see little dots, it is a printed postcard and not a RPPC. If the image is solid, it is a RPPC.

How Can You Tell How Old a RPPC Is?

Many RPPCs have marks on the back which identify the manufacturer of the paper that the photograph is developed on. Look for a stampbox in the upper right hand corner. How to Handle Records

Vinyl Records, LPs, 45s and 78s are very susceptible to damage. Here are some tips I found online to keep your collectible records in great shape!

Hold by Edges

The oils on your hands can damage the playing surface. So Avoid Touching! Hold your disk by the edges and on the labeled surface only. Or wear thin, clean cotton gloves.
Avoid creating scratches by not dropping the record and by making sure that the stylus (needle) is clean and free of dust. Also don’t drop the stylus on the record or shake the turntable causing the needle to skip over the grooves. Scratches are permanent and degrade the sound of the record.
Make sure that your needle is the correct one for the record. Don’t play the record with a dull needle. Dull needles cause damage that cannot be repaired.
Keep your turntable clean and free of dust by keeping the dust cover closed and remove dust promptly.
Avoid stacking records on a turntable (the use of a spindle to stack albums and 45′s was commonplace in the 50′s and 60′s). Or placing on any other surface without a protective sleeve
When done playing your record, give it a quick brush to remove any dust and static. Return it to its sleeve. If you plan on listening to your vinyl for any decent period of time, invest in a carbon fiber record brush
