Dating cabinet photos depends on characteristics like the card stock use, the type of paper and decoration.
The latest Cabinet card photos are from the period 1890 or later. Here are the characteristics to look for:
- Card Stock is quare, heavy weight card stock and may have Scalloped edges
- Card Colors were different for face and back of mounts
- Borders from 1885-1892 featured Gold beveled edges;from 1889-1896 featured Rounded corner rule of single line; and from 1890s on featured Embossed borders and/or lettering
- Lettering included embossed studio name or other embossed designs

For the period 1880-1890, here are the characteristics to look for:
- Square, heavy weight card stock
- From 1880-1890 there were different colours for face and back of mounts. From 1882-1888 one finds a matte-finish front, with a creamy-yellow, glossy back.
- From 1866-1880 Borders were red or gold rules, single and double lines. From 1884-1885 one finds wide gold borders, and from 1885-1892 one finds gold beveled edges.
- Lettering included gold text on black card stock.

The earliest Cabinet card photos are from the period 1866-1880. Here are the characteristics to look for:
- Card Stock is square, a lightweight mount
- Card Colors were white, off white or light cream in a thin,light weight card stock.
- Borders were red or gold rules, single or double lines.
- Lettering included the photographer name and address often printed small and neatly just below the image and/or studio name printed small on the back. Large ornate text for photographer name came in in 1880.
