Vintage Handkerchiefs

Besides collecting them…that is. Some of these old charmers are becoming more collectible. Especially desirable are the old state map or souvenir handkerchiefs. High prices are paid for hand worked embroidery and crocheted edgings. And who doesn’t love the colorful screen printed florals?

Now that going green is “in”, one might consider using a cloth hanky instead of a tissue for the original purpose. These can be washed and sanitized by using a mild bleach solution. I think I’d use the paper kind when I know I have a virus, as I can control the spread of the disease by proper disposal. But I have allergies and often have need of a handkerchief. So a cloth one will do nicely.

Vintage Handkerchiefs

Here’s some things that I found on the web.

• Handkerchief Dolls-These charmers are made by stuffing a bit of polyester into the center and drawing two corners to the center to make hands. Popular at bazaars apparently.
• Pieced Linens-A lovely table cover or curtains can be made by sewing hankys together end to end. These can be made to size to fit the spot the seamstress has in mind.
• Pillow Cover-Tack two identical hankys together and stuff for a lovely little pillow or tack a hanky to an existing pillow that needs freshening up.
• Shelf Edging or Valence-Fold hankies in half so that a triangle shape is formed, and place in a row so that the decorative corner hangs over the edge of the shelf or curtain rod. Instant charm.
• Handkerchief Quilt-Applique a group of lovely handkerchiefs onto a quilt.

• Baby Bonnet-This website has directions for making a baby bonnet from a lace hanky. Very cute made up in a vintage hanky for the mother to be that loves vintage.
